BMW has decided that its new generation of electric vehicles should not simply be an evolution of what we already know. The new BMW iX3 50 xDrive is the first production model of the so-called Neue Klasse, a new architecture that affects propulsion, the battery, electronics, software, and also the…

The third generation of the LEAF has made great strides in 2026, both in terms of design, which is much more modern and streamlined, and in terms of range and technological equipment, designed to make daily use of the car easier. When Nissan introduced the first LEAF in 2020, electric vehicles were
Hand in hand with Motor Espai, which is not only the official Škoda dealer but also that of the Spanish brand Ebro, we had the opportunity to test the Ebro S700 HEV Luxury, the most complete of the 700 series.
The truth is that after the positive reviews received by the brand's models, such as the S400, I was eager to get behind the wheel of one of their models. Moreover, I acknowledge that this legendary name in the Spanish automotive industry conveys good feelings to me, even if from afar, as beyond the name itself and despite the fact that this new generation Ebro has nothing to do with the old Spanish brand, I must say, it makes me happy that Ebro has been reborn!
The S700, which has so far been available with a gasoline engine and in a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version, now incorporates a third option: the conventional hybrid (HEV) and does so with a battery management system that, after a short but intense test, I found quite interesting.

A well-resolved hybrid system
The hybrid setup of this new version combines a 1.5 turbo four-cylinder combustion engine with two electric motors and a small lithium-ion battery. In total, the system delivers a maximum power of 224 HP.
At the wheel, the Ebro S700 HEV shows itself as a solid, efficient, and very pleasant SUV to drive, even though on paper there are only 13 HP more compared to the S400, its smaller sibling in the catalog. Furthermore, considering that the S700 is significantly larger, this data makes me think that the 400 must also perform quite well. But let’s not digress; it doesn't take much for me to jump from one topic to another! So back to the S700.
The performance of the HEV engine is more than sufficient for the type of vehicle it is. Proof of this is that the car takes 8.7 seconds to go from 0 to 100 km/h, a figure that allows it to move very smoothly both in the city and on the road.
As a proposition, this is a particularly logical alternative for those drivers looking for comfort and who do not want to worry about plugging the vehicle into the grid and everything that entails. In fact, compared to the S700 PHEV, which we need to connect to access the full potential of its hybrid system, the HEV accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h just 3 tenths of a second slower, meaning minimal difference. If we add to this that the HEV does not need to be plugged in, it makes sense that it ends up having broader commercial appeal. Additionally, the consumption is equally contained.
During the test, we drove up to Grau Roig and Incles, following from Canillo to Ordino and then descending to La Massana, in the central valley, and from there to La Seu d’Urgell. Once back in the city center of the Principality, we ended up circulating for a good while among the usual traffic that unfortunately exists at all times of the day.
The average consumption ranged between 2.3 liters to 7. The highest records were logically noted on the uphill sections towards Grau Roig and subsequently on the ascent from Canillo towards Ordino, while the average quickly recovered, just like the battery charge, during the downhill stretches. However, it is worth making a clarification, as the system only shows the consumption corresponding to the last 50 kilometers, making it impossible to obtain an exact average consumption figure. I don’t think this is the most practical way to present this information, but it is what it is!

In any case, the conclusion is clear: the S700 HEV, despite being of considerable size, consumes just what is necessary and does so while providing very good performance in any scenario. If we add that the car has a tank capacity of 51 liters, I can understand that the autonomy could reach even over 800 kilometers.
Smoothness as the main argument
Another aspect that impressed me the most was the perceived smoothness of operation. It is a very pleasant SUV to drive, mainly because it delivers power in a progressive and linear manner, and you hardly notice it.
The availability of the electric system kicks in whenever necessary, which, combined with the silence of the hybrid setup, regardless of the phase in which the engine is operating, decisively contributes to generating a remarkable feeling of tranquility and comfort, even relaxation, I would say. And here comes another aspect that quite surprised me: sound insulation. I mention this because we are talking about an SUV costing less than 26 thousand euros (starting price), making it not so evident that there would be sound insulation, but there is!
Speaking of work and well-done things, which does not necessarily mean expensive, everything regarding the interiors radiates style, something that is quickly perceived once you sit behind the wheel, as I repeat, let's not forget we are talking about very competitive prices.
Personally, given the price positioning of the model, both from the starting price and the Luxury finish that we tested, I expected to find simpler finishes. The reality, however, was quite different: the interior is well-finished and the materials used for the trims and panels convey a sense of quality far superior to what we might initially expect.
For all of this, I increasingly understand that the S700 is a vehicle clearly oriented towards comfort, balanced and without extravagance, yes, but in any case, oriented towards comfort.
The truth is that whether it is due to the finishes I have mentioned, the sound insulation sensation, or the balance of the HEV hybrid system, the progressive response of its engine, and the electric system's ability to support whenever necessary, the pairing is ideal.

Improved suspension
Coinciding with the arrival of this hybrid version, Ebro has also introduced some changes to the chassis. One of the most important has been the specific tuning of the suspension, which is now firmer. This modification has significantly improved the vehicle's dynamic behavior without compromising ride comfort. I can't comment on the previous suspensions as I didn’t test them, but I can say that in this new configuration the feel is balanced and transmits the sensation you would expect to find in an SUV of this size and weight.
The steering, on the other hand, might feel less direct. In some way, it does not convey all the information about what is happening on the road, but, well, we won’t raise a ruckus, we must keep in mind the overall car and the price it costs, so that’s said and done! Also, I must find some objection. Additionally, driving in the city, it is convenient as it requires little effort, a feature especially appreciated when maneuvering and parking. It's only on the highway where I found myself missing a bit more precision and information.
Small changes that make a difference
The positive aspect is that Ebro is demonstrating a significant capacity for reaction to any evolution to be made. They are identifying points that can be improved in their fleet and working intensively to evolve them quickly. That said, a good example of this evolutionary capability shines through in the interior of the S700.
Taking advantage of the launch of the HEV version, Ebro has introduced some changes that, although small, make a lot of sense from the perspective of everyday use.
One of them is the gear selector. Both the gasoline S700 and the PHEV use quite a striking lever that can even seem unusual, while the new S700 HEV debuts a much more subdued selector, finished in leather, which fits better with the rest of the cabin.

The button panel located on the center console, below the air vents, has also been modified. In the gasoline and PHEV versions, these controls are touch-sensitive, while in the S700 HEV we find conventional physical buttons. I know what you are thinking: it was a good decision! These controls mainly correspond to the climate control system and, while everything can also be controlled from the central screen, having physical buttons is faster, intuitive, and safer while driving.
A spacious interior and a trunk that could be better
Beyond these changes, the S700 continues to be the same SUV as the previous versions. This means that the cabin offers a good level of space for five adults to travel comfortably. However, the trunk might be a bit short; let’s say its 369 liters are enough for the luggage of four people, not five. This capacity is the same in the gasoline and PHEV versions.
Regarding equipment, the S700 HEV is marketed in two trims: Comfort and Luxury. Both present a quite complete standard endowment, but the Luxury, being the highest level in the range, incorporates additional elements such as a panoramic roof, a 540-degree camera —with a function that allows virtually visualizing the undercarriage of the vehicle— and the front seats with electric adjustment, heating, and ventilation.

A proposal with arguments
Shall we talk about prices? The starting price of the Ebro S700 range is €25,800, corresponding to the gasoline version with the Comfort finish.
The unit we tested, the Ebro S700 HEV Luxury, starts at €29,800.
These are quite adjusted prices for an SUV of these dimensions, especially considering the level of equipment and technology it includes.
Furthermore, in the case of opting for the plug-in hybrid version (PHEV), you can apply for the corresponding aid under the Engega Plan, provided it is for the next year 2027.
In conclusion, I can say that the Ebro S700 HEV does not aim to revolutionize the segment, but it offers a very coherent combination of comfort, equipment, consumption, and ease of use, but above all, it does so without forcing us to change our habits or digging deep into our pockets. On the other hand, the hybrid system, very efficient and balanced, works automatically, and we don’t have to worry about plugging it in. All of this is what best defines the personality of the S700 HEV.
