Just over four years ago, Porsche surprised at the Los Angeles Motor Show with the launch of the 911 Dakar, one of the most unique and bold interpretations of the iconic sports car from Stuttgart.
Against all odds, it was not merely an exercise in style, designed to be a showpiece at the industry's largest exhibitions. Instead, it was a 911 conceived to go far beyond asphalt without having to renounce the essence that has made the 911 a unique legend.
Produced in a limited series of just 2,500 units worldwide – some of which have been available at Ted Automòbils – the 911 Dakar retains the dynamic qualities typical of a 911, but at the same time is capable of tackling trails, sand, and mud with utmost proficiency. All this as a direct homage to Porsche's first overall victory at the Rallye Paris-Dakar 42 years ago, a milestone that marked the birth of all-wheel drive in the legendary sports car.

One of the most distinctive features of the 911 Dakar is – obviously – its ground clearance, 50 millimeters higher than that of a 911 Carrera with sports suspension. To this figure must be added a chassis lift system that allows the height to be increased by an additional 30 mm, not only to overcome obstacles at low speeds but also to drive safely in extremely demanding conditions. With the suspension in the highest position, the 911 Dakar can drive off-road at up to 170 km/h. Above this speed, the vehicle automatically lowers to its normal configuration.
480 PS and 570 Nm of maximum torque
The package is completed with Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus tires, specifically developed for this model, measuring 245/45 ZR 19 at the front and 295/40 ZR 20 at the rear. The tread pattern, with a depth of 9 millimeters, and the two-ply casing on both the sidewalls and the center of the tire, ensure optimal adaptation to the most complicated terrains, without penalizing sporting performance on asphalt.
Under the rear hood, we find the renowned three-liter twin-turbo flat-six engine, capable of delivering 480 PS with a maximum torque of 570 Nm. The performance speaks for itself: acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds and a top speed electronically limited to 240 km/h (given the nature of the tires).
The entire setup is paired as standard with an eight-speed PDK transmission and Porsche's all-wheel drive.
The technical level of this machine is indicative of a no-compromise sports car. The rear-axle steering, engine mounts inherited from the 911 GT3, and the PDCC active roll control system ensure that the 911 Dakar is equally effective on paved roads, sand, mud, or low-grip surfaces. Furthermore, it features two specific driving modes: Rallye, which prioritizes rear-wheel traction to facilitate driving on slippery surfaces, and Offroad, which automatically raises the body and optimizes traction in extreme situations. Both modes include Rallye Launch Control, designed to achieve powerful acceleration even in very precarious conditions.
Aesthetically, the 911 Dakar doesn't go unnoticed, and even less so the unit you see in these spectacular images provided by photographer Laura Ligier. Beyond the ice white color, a kind of grayish-blue tone, elements like the lightweight rear spoiler and the front trunk lid stand out, both made of carbon fiber reinforced polymer. The large GT3-inspired air vents also catch the eye.
The red-painted aluminum tow hooks, widened wheel arches, and stainless steel protections along the perimeter of the vehicle reinforce an image clearly oriented towards adventure but elegantly, without falling into excesses.
The roof incorporates a 12-volt power socket to power the headlights of the (optional) roof rack, capable of supporting up to 42 kilograms of load, for transporting all the equipment typical of a rally raid.
Inside, the bucket seats and the absence of rear seats reflect a clear intention to reduce weight. In this regard, thanks to the use of lightweight glass and a specific battery, the total weight of the car is 1,605 kg, only 10 kg more than a 911 Carrera GTS PDK.
As I mentioned a few lines above, the unit illustrating this report stands out for a particularly elegant configuration, with the body painted in grayish-blue perfectly combined with black rims and an interior dominated by black leather with stitching in the same grayish-blue tone. Personalized details, including the seat belts, complete a combination that is both sophisticated and exclusive.
The result? A different, radically coherent, exclusive, and absolutely brutal 911 that year after year is harder to acquire, not to mention its continuously rising price!
